"I hope my snow becomes a cherished memory for everyone."

— Sugar, episode 24 closure

Sugar (シュガー) is a female snow fairy apprentice working to learn how to be a full fledged season fairy like her beloved mother. Hailing from the fairy world, she comes to the human world for the final part of her training which requires her to find a so-called "Twinkle". Sugar acts much like a toddler with a clumsy nature who often tries her best at things, but messes up because she doesn't always think things through. She loves to kiss people and even inanimate objects when she's happy. The one who is most flustered by this is Salt.

After Saga first feeds her a waffle, she comes to love treats, and waffles become her favorite food, though she can't pronounce the word and instead calls them "waffos". She soon comes to use the term "Waffo!" as an interjection when excited. In the manga adaptation, she was familiar with the word before eating one.

She is later joined by two other fairies, Salt and Pepper. They are her best friends, and often accompany her on her search for a "Twinkle", as well as offer her advice. She might have a crush on Salt, as she does things to indicate this, but it is not proven (she never outright states her crush on him).

Appearance[]

Sugar is a young female apprentice Snow Fairy, and the smallest out of all the apprentice fairies. She has pink hair with two strands longer than the rest, ending in circular "music-note"-like shapes, as well as an ahoge. She has large, dark, very expressive eyes, appearing purplish-blue in color. She has one set of two small, round, and transparent, blue-turquoise-colored wings on her back (sometimes appearing green depending on lighting).

She wears a fluffy white dress with puffy sleeves, and has a large purple bow on the back with a white cotton ball at the center, representing a rabbit's tail. She wears white baby booties with tan soles, fluffy collars, and purple frills at the top (potentially socks), and are adorned with a purple crystal-like snowflake. In addition to this, she also wears a fluffy white choker with the same snowflake decoration. She wears a fluffy white bonnet designed after Japanese snow rabbits, and a purse of the same design inspiration.

Her purse appears to work as a sort of magic hammerspace and she uses it to store her flute, though she's also been seen storing other things in it as well (i.e., when she tries to store candy in it in episode 16). Her flute is a light blue with purple accent and pink keys, and each end has a red gem. The gem on the farthest end lights up and emits sparkles when magic is in use.

Synopsis[]

History[]

Sugar's mother is said to be one of the best Snow Fairies of them all, her snow described by her daughter as soft and warm, able to bring people together for wonderful memories. Sugar claims that all other Snow Fairies want to be at least half as good as her. Inspired by her mother's ability to make people happy and bring them together with cherished, warm memories of her snow, Sugar became a Snow Fairy apprentice, dreaming of being a great Snow Fairy just like her. After completing the majority of what she learned at school in the fairy world, she was then sent to the human world to complete her training with the mission to find a "Twinkle" and make her magic flower bloom, as well as learn about the world, in order to graduate and become fully fledged, as is the task required of all Season Fairy apprentices.

Sweet Mischief (eps 1-4)[]

Sugar, at first, was on her own after arriving in the human world. She grew hungry, and one rainy afternoon in the town of Muhlenburg, Germany, she found herself sitting on a crate with fading energy due to starvation. It is then that a young human girl happened to run to the spot to get out of the rain. Sugar was too distracted by the pangs of her starvation to notice, but when the human seemed to look over at her, Sugar looked, only to see the girl appearing to not notice -- albeit the girl only pretended not to see her. As Sugar had been taught, humans couldn't see Season Fairies, anyway. The pangs returned until it became too much to handle, and Sugar collapsed. The girl noticed her weakened state, and pulled a waffle out of her schoolbag. To Sugar's surprise, she smelled the treat being held to her before she opened her eyes to see the girl offering it to her. Sugar used her strength to sit back up and take a tiny bite out of the treat--and immediately fell in love. Before the girl knew it, Sugar began scarfing the waffle down and snatched it out of her hand, consuming the entire thing in a matter of seconds. She appeared to eat it too fast, though, and fell off the crate, seeming to fall unconscious, and the girl scrambled to catch her.

The human, named Saga, took Sugar home in her skirt pocket, intending to show her to her grandmother, Regina, but Sugar was no longer to be found. Sugar managed to find her way into her schoolbag instead, eating the extra waffle Saga had stored for her grandmother. Soon, she wasexploring the new setting, flying in the kitchen around Regina in excitement over the stew she was making. Saga saw her and tried to say something to her grandmother before she grabbed Sugar and ran off to her room, confusing her grandmother. Sugar was irritated by Saga being rough with her at first, until she realized the human girl could see her, and kissed her on the nose. A flustered Saga ran to grab an information book to try and find something about her to no avail. Sugar announced her name and that she was a Season Fairy. However, Saga was convinced that Sugar was a mere figment of her imagination and tried to ignore her for the rest of the night. She struggled in doing so as the little creature continued to slurp up food at the dinner table and make a ruckus in her room. Saga realized that her grandmother could not see her. Sugar, after trying to ask Saga to play with her, at last found Saga's pink toy piano and played with it, prompting Saga to attempt to go to sleep and ignore her. Sugar, having seen indication that this human could in fact see her, was frustrated by being ignored, making a last resort of using her magic to summon snow. This caught Saga by surprise, and the two introduced.

However, the next morning, Saga awoke thinking it was a dream, until Sugar woke up and asked if there was any food after wearing herself out from magic overnight. Sugar found Saga had immediately jumped back in her bed, trying to hold on to her last hope that it was a dream. Sugar flew over and kissed her. Saga reacted by screaming, frustrated that "a Snow Fairy" was not part of her plan. Sugar explained about herself, Season Fairies, and her mission to become a Snow Fairy like her mother, unable to explain to Saga why she could see her. Saga had to interrupt in order to head to school. The fact that humans also had school made Sugar curious, and invited herself along, to Saga's dismay. Saga tried to barricade her in a stack of books to prevent her from going, but Sugar made her way out, accidentally dropping her important magic seed, a vital item in her mission, out of her purse onto the pink toy piano in Saga's room. Sugar caught up, only to find herself weak again from hunger, and unable to fly. Saga took pity on her and took her to the waffle stand in town, filling Sugar with excitement to again try the wonderful snack she had eaten the day before. Sugar officially learned it was called a waffle by asking Saga; unable to properly pronounce the word, this would be the start of her saying "waffo". Sugar promptly fell asleep, prompting Saga to wake her up and rush to school.

As such, Saga was late to school, but was let off for it only being one time. Sugar didn't understand much of what was going on in the human school, and unfortunately, made a bit of a disruption for Saga in class. Saga's friends, Norma and Anne noticed her unusual behavior, thinking she might be ill. A girl named Greta began showing off a special ring her father had bough for her. Sugar assumed it to be a "Twinkle" and snatched it off her finger, only to collide with the ceiling. To answer more questions Saga had about this "Twinkle", Sugar tried explaining how vital it was to find, only when questioned on what it was, she didn't know exactly what it was herself. Sugar pleaded with Saga if she knew what a Twinkle was, questioning if she was "really human" since she was a "human who didn't know about Twinkles". To make matters worse, another of Saga's classmates, Phil, and his friends, Alan and Jan, were working on a rain-making machine, the Rain Genie EX. Sugar was fascinated by the attempted invention and decided to make snowfall, and in spite Saga trying to stop them, the combination of elements and Phil's failed work blew the classroom up in smoke. Saga finally snapped from the mess that had been caused and yelled at Sugar in front of everyone. Saga was kept behind with the teacher in concern over her outburst. Sugar felt bad and tried to apologize, but Saga in annoyance ignored her. Sugar almost thought Saga just couldn't see her anymore, until Saga stopped in town and told her to part ways with her, upset by how her plans and life had been made a mess just in the short time after she found her.

Sugar began breaking down in tears just before Salt and Pepper, showed up. In an instant, Sugar was elated to see them, showering them in kisses--at least, she tried to with Salt; he wasn't so fond of it. Sugar introduced them to Saga, but they questioned her, reminding her that humans can't see them. Upon realizing she could, Pepper mentioned reading in a book that it was possible for some "gifted" humans to see them. The three began talking about planting their magic seeds, Salt and Pepper having already done so, but Sugar not. Salt, boasting how his had sprouted, offered Sugar to go see it. As if she had completely forgotten what Saga said and her feelings earlier, she flew off with the two, leaving Saga in disbelief: "What the heck was that?"

Sugar later returned to Saga's house that day, frantically searching Saga's room after realizing she had lost her magic seed. Saga found her room a mess after hearing a loud thud, angered as to why she was back. Seeing Sugar panicked and crying over losing something important, she helped her look, until she noticed it on her toy piano where Sugar had accidentally dropped it earlier. The seed was now sprouted, so in spite Saga telling her to pluck it up and leave, Sugar sheepishly explained she couldn't and that now this was where she would have to live. Saga nervously tried to object, but only dug herself in by calling Sugar by name. Sugar only grew excited that she had and showered her in kisses, asking her to watch out for her and that she would make her proud once she would become a full-fledged Snow Fairy. Relieved, Sugar fell asleep on-spot and Saga caught her. With a sigh, she cleaned out an old jewelry box by her bed, placing the sleeping Sugar in it

The next morning, Sugar tried to tag along with Saga for a shopping day out, frustrated with Saga telling her not to. Before getting the chance, Salt and Pepper met up with her to begin their search for a Twinkle. Sugar realized she had nearly forgotten her mission, and the three spent their day looking all over town for one. The three of them had differences in opinion on what a "Twinkle" was like, Sugar thinking that it obviously must twinkle, while Salt believed it was warm, and Pepper believed that it was soft. After snacking on some waffles, Sugar noticed an old bell up in a nest in a hole in a rooftop. Believing it was a Twinkle, she fetched it, only for the fairies to be targeted with their first encounter with Joe the Crow. Joe, being attracted to shiny objects, chased Sugar, and Salt got caught in the line as the bird chased them over town, Pepper trying to follow. Sugar hid with Salt in the local junkyard where Phil spends his time on inventions, but Joe found them. Salt escaped, but Sugar was pursued by Joe until she fell down with the bird into an old birdcage, and it tumbled down until it was jammed shut under an old junked car. Salt and Pepper began trying to find a way to get her out, even trying to get the attention of Phil and his friends in spite the boys being unable to see them. After all failed, they realized Saga could help.

Relationships[]

Saga Bergman[]

Saga is Sugar's human companion and ultimately close friend. Saga and Sugar's friendship is the most central to the series as their relationship develops and gradually grows the two as characters. Their friendship got off to a rough start, as frequent times their personalities clashed because of Sugar's childish, reckless nature compared to Saga's mature, workaholic organization. Saga seemed to see Sugar as nothing more than a nuisance at first, but nonetheless felt bad whenever Sugar was hungry or was in need of help and would nonetheless come to her rescue. Sugar was often frustrated and even annoyed, even hurt when Saga didn't reciprocate her desire to be friends and when the two disagreed. Yet Sugar's positivity, ability to see the good, and never give up persisted and allowed her to always have faith in her friendship with Saga. When Saga protested to Sugar living with her, Sugar was instead excited that Saga called her by name for the first time. Sugar looked to Saga to look after her while she was in the human world, and desired to one day see to it that she'd make Saga proud of her once she'd find a Twinkle and become fully-fledged. Saga was reluctant of Sugar, but in spite their ups and downs, they grew close. Eventually, Saga was able to move on from her pain and accept the past because she had Sugar.

Salt[]

Salt is one of Sugar's best friends and always looks out for her. Salt seems to be a bit protective over her, yet is often annoyed and even flustered by her frequent habit of kissing him and others, trying to avoid it at all costs. Sugar being the tomboy of the trio and Salt being the only boy, the two seem to slightly roughhouse a little bit and play a bit more rough since Pepper is too polite in nature, as shown when they get in trouble being chased by Joe, getting in trouble with a cat (after thinking its glowing eye was a "twinkle" and fighting over it), and playing swords with Saga's crayons while Pepper simply inspected them. Salt, much like Pepper, shows concern for Sugar and her relationship with Saga.

When Salt and Pepper return to help Sugar and Saga in episode 23, while he still tries to wrestle against it, blushes and chuckles while telling her to stop this time around when she kisses him.

Trivia[]

  • Harukia Aoi (writer) recalled Sugar originally being more quiet and calm. Sugar's character ended up being more tomboyish than originally planned for the story, but after seeing it, Aoi thought it was cute and that it would fit her. [2]
  • The character of Sugar started with the basic idea that the main character of the series would be a snow fairy. When trying to think of a name, Yasunori Yamada (series structure) associated snow with white, which he said reminded him of "sugar", giving the snow fairy her name. With that name decided, he decided that all of the other fairies would also have the names of condiments, and no one objected to it.[2]
  • Originally, the story about Sugar was supposed to be set strictly in the fairy world, until Saga was created. [2]
  • Sugar frequently dreams about doing her magic and making the Magic flower bloom. She also frequently talks in her sleep throughout the anime.
